Joe Dainty became a member of the Lloyd’s Art Group in 2023, debuting his work in that year’s Winter Exhibition. Like many people, Joe tried painting during lockdown, despite not really having picked up a pencil since his school days. A beautiful watercolour style emerged.

With delicate washes of colour applied over detailed pen, and highlights of art marker adding vibrancy, Joe’s whimsical and playful paintings delightfully capture everyday City scenes that we all know so well. There is a quiet joy and uplifting tone, which invites you to smile and reflect on small, beautiful moments of City life. With his talent and subject matter, it was no surprise that he sold all his paintings in a flash and resoundingly won the Public Vote, receiving the prize kindly sponsored by Liberty Specialty Markets.

We were all deeply sad to learn that Joe lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in early 2024, not very long after we at Lloyd’s Art Group got to know him. We are grateful to the Head of the Underwriting Room, Kimberley Sandiford, who had encouraged Joe to join our group and exhibit. We wish our friendship could have lasted far longer. Joe was clearly a highly-regarded and much-loved member of the market and many of his paintings are now cherished by market friends. A further collection is owned by the Lloyd’s Market Association and is on display in their office on Gallery 4 of the Lloyd’s building.
