Chris Plato trained as a graphic designer and fell in love with typography.
After graduation he set up and ran for twenty years a design studio in Clerkenwell, London and numbered amongst his clients a City of London marine insurer, an Adult Education literacy unit and a psychiatrist.
The work on display in this exhibition is produced by striking metal punches onto art paper. He takes everyday phrases and aims to create a ‘letter picture’, asking the viewer to do a ‘double take’ and hopefully raise a smile along the way.
Through his collaborations with the artist Philippa Beale, who has used text extensively in her art, examples of his work are in private and national collections.
